Lines worth Remembering

Why We Broke Up

An illustrated novel by Daniel Handler.

I first saw the book and grabbed a copy of it five years ago but it wasn’t until earlier this year that I actually committed myself to finish.

“…your heart doesn’t even know what it desires until it turns up.”

“Take back the smile and the night, take it all back, I wish I could.”

“I gave you an adventure, Ed, right in front of you but you never saw it until I showed you, and that’s why we broke up.”

“I started making plans, thinking we would get that far.”

“Undeveloped, the whole thing, tossed into a box before we really had a chance to know what we had, and that’s why we broke up.”

“We couldn’t only have the magic nights buzzing through the wires. We had to have the days, too…”

“..and you were something else fierce and fiery in my chest and I tired to put it together in my head…”

“It didn’t last, it wasn’t clear for much longer, and that’s why we broke up…”

“But everything else is gone. I mean, I love you is gone…”

“It’s why we broke up, Ed, a small thing that’s disappeared or maybe was never really in my hands in the first place.”

“I stayed there loving you, though the love made me, not sad but I guess melancholy, for a reason I couldn’t point to.”

“Then where were you, is what I wanted to say, all my lonely times, but right next to me, I knew, was where…”

Everything Everything

A novel by Nicola Yoon.

Let me just say, I enjoyed the twist in the novel. 🙂

Now, here are the lines which stood out for me and lines which, in one way or another, struck. Hope one of them would have the same effect on you, too.

“Life is hard, honey. Everyone finds a way.”

“It’s easier not to know.”

“Everything’s a risk. Not doing anything is a risk. It’s up to you.”

“He’s not safe. He’s not familiar. He’s in constant  motion. He’s the  biggest  risk I’ve ever taken.”

“But the difference between knowing it and seeing them in person is the difference between dreaming about flying and flight.”

“Just because you can’t experience everything doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experience anything. Besides, doomed love is a part of life.”

“Wanting just leads to more wanting. There’s no end to desire.”

“You have enough things to be afraid of. Love can’t kill you.”

“It’s weird to miss something you’ve never had – or don’t remember having , anyway.”

“…and how sometimes you can’t unmix things no matter how much you might want to.”

“Spend some time with your mother. Boys come and go, but mothers are forever.”

“Life is a gift. Don’t forget to live it.”

“Friends don’t give you false hope.”

“I’ve always felt her heart reaching out to protect mine.”

“There are entire worlds that exist just beneath our notice of them.”

“…love opens you up to the world.”

“You’re not living if you’re not regretting.”

“Human beings are mysterious and paradoxical.”

“Into all lives a little turbulence must fall.”

“prom-ise… the lie you want to keep.”

“Being in love with you is better than the first time. It feels like the first time and the last time and the only time all at once.”

“I promise you that I know my own heart. It’s one of the few things that’s not completely new to me.”

“Love is a terrible thing and its loss is even worse.”

“Can you reach the end of tears? I wonder.”

“There’s more to life than being alive.”

Before I Fall

A novel written by Lauren Oliver.

If you’ve watched 50 First Dates, then the concept of reliving the same day everyday is not new to you. Before I Fall, however, is nowhere near giving you the same 50-First-Dates-feels. Belonging to a clique which seems to be the millennial version of mean girls, the main character (Samantha) finds herself waking up to the same day – the day when she ended up dying. In pursuit to break the “curse,” she tries to change certain details of her day, hoping to change how it’s going to end. No matter how she changes her actions however, she can’t seem to escape death.

I will end there since I don’t want to spoil you, so I’m just going to go and share with you some lines which, in one way or another, I found myself highlighting.

“Funny how you can know your friends so well, but you still end up playing the same games with them.”

“If you repeat something enough, you can almost make yourself believe it.”

“It’s weird how much you can know about someone without knowing everything.”

“…and I suddenly wish I could remember each one singularly, like somehow if I could remember them all, I could have them back.”

“A good friend keeps your secrets for you. a best friend helps you keep your own secrets.”

“Is it still falling if it has no end?”

“…hope keeps you alive.”

“I used to think that’s what love was: knowing someone so well he was like a part of you.”

“It’s like the idea of him is better than the him of him.”

“Mistake, mistake, mistake. A strange word: stinging somehow.”

“I suppose that’s the secret, if you’re ever wishing for things to go back to the way they were. You just have to look up.”

“It amazes me how easy it is for things to change, how easy it is to start off down the same road you always take and wind up somewhere new. Just one false step, one pause, one detour, and you end up with new friends or a bad reputation or a boyfriend or a breakup.”

“I vowed after that day that I would be your hero, too, no matter how long it took…”

“So many things become beautiful when you really look.”

“I guess that’s what saying goodbye is always like – like jumping off an edge.”
